Doc Abrams cuts straight through Noraâs phone number and then splits my cast apart, revealing a more diminished part of myself, the skin of my arm scaly and dry. I marvel at how light I feel without it, relieved to be finally rid of it. I glance at Nora, and she glances quickly away, her lips pressed together and her eyes bright. Iâm hit with the guilty realization that the sight of my cast might have comforted her, the knowledge there was someone other than her carrying that day on the road long after everyone else moved on.
Another piece of Ashley, disappearing.
After itâs done, we head back to her car. She leans against it, and I settle beside her, our arms brushing, neither of us in a hurry to head out.
She stares at the street, silent.
âThanks for taking me,â I say.
She shrugs. âWhat are you doing the rest of the day?â
âStaying out of Tylerâs way. Think he deserves a break from me.â
âMy dadâs not home. Wanna come over?â
â⦠Okay.â
We get in the car, slamming our doors shut at the same time. She pulls out of the parking lot while I run my hand over my arm, reacquainting myself with it. Itâs as weak as it looks, aches in a way Iâm not expecting. On the way to Noraâs house, I grit my teeth and flex my fingers, willing it to feel as strong as it did before.
âSqueeze my hand,â Nora says suddenly, holding hers out, palm-side up. I reach over and wrap my fingers around hers, squeezing, like she told me to, but my grip is shy of where I want it to be. She laces her fingers between mine, telling me to squeeze again. I watch her as I do, but her eyes stay on the road. I decide to keep my hand in hers until she decides to let go, but she doesnât let go and, after a while, I forget to squeeze.
